PhD Funding

The CDT has a number of fully funded PhD studentships covering tuition fees (home and EU student) and an enhanced maintenance scholarship for four years funded by EPSRC, the Universities of Sheffield and Manchester and industrial collaborators.

In 2016/17 the minimum tax-free stipend is £14,296 enhanced to £16,296 in the first year. In years 2-4 it is expected that all students will be sponsored by industry with a stipend enhancement in the region of £3,000pa.

There will be the opportunity to undertake a 2-3 month placement in the company or an overseas research institution

Up to 6 students per cohort will be recruited to the CDT each year who will choose their projects after about 6 months from a selection put forward by CDT staff and their industrial collaborators. Students must be UK nationals who have been resident in the UK for the past 3 years to be eligible for these projects.

Other students will be recruited directly to specific projects put forward by our industrial collaborators. Students from the UK or EU are eligible for these projects.

Applications from international students are welcome but students should arrange their own funding to cover tuition fees and living costs for 4 years. In exceptional cases, the CDT may be able to support living costs for international students who already have a fees only scholarship.
